part 4-now how to speak?

What you need to know before you start: Chinese sounds very different from English (most alphabet languages), but don’t get nervous. Basic spoken Chinese is easy to learn. Compared with English, Chinese pronunciation is more concentrated in the vocal cords of the larynx, so the tone of Chinese is easy to change quickly. Another thing about spoken Chinese is that you don’t need to worry about grammar. People can understand you even if your word order is confused. So ignore grammar and focus on pronunciation. The above three videos explain Chinese tones and the Chinese alphabet as well as some tips on learning Chinese. What you need to do is watch and practice with your family or friends or classmates.

Now it’s time to check how you’re doing! After all course materials have been released, we will have a ZOOM meeting where students will:

  1. Make a team with your classmates and have a simple conversation in Chinese.

Topics you can choose from are:
a. Greeting at the first meeting
b. Ask about the price when buying something
c. Discuss your favourite foods d. …

  1. Then you should make a short presentation on one of the course topics. Your tutor and TA will be graded. This presentation requires to make a simple PPT. Each group should speak for no more than 10 minutes. The speech will be delivered by Zoom (don’t forget to turn on the camera! Let us know who you are.
  2. Finally, you will complete a quiz with 5multiple choice questions.

It’s time to learn something about the historical changes in China.

-You will learn the name of the first Chinese dynasty by watching this video.

-Which dynasty do you like best, which dynasty is the most famous, according to your personal opinion.

1-China has a long historical background. I believe most people are curious about the historical changes in China and the relationship between different dynasties. This video introduces the changes of dynasties in China, and the area of land covered by each dynasty is different.

2-China had a total of 83 dynasties and 559 emperors, By watching this video. I hope you can understand who first discovered mainland China and indirectly caused the disappearance of feudalism.

3-In addition to the dynasties long ago, this video also simply describes the modern history of China to us through interactive pictures, such as the fall of the Qing Dynasty, Japan’s war, the founding of the People’s Republic of China and so on.

part 1-introduction

Because of the communication between different countries in the world and trade become more and more frequent, so more and more people want to learn mandarin and some Chinese history and culture, so we like everybody through this project to introduce a simple historical background, and some useful mandarin, it will help you have a better understanding of China. Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, our courses will be conducted entirely online. We will use YouTube, to support student learning. First, the basic course videos will be posted on the website . Students will learn the basics by watching a series of 50-minute videos. Lecture videos will explain the basic information on each topic and briefly outline all the material (2-3 videos ) under each subtopic.

Each video has a corresponding explanation, I recommend starting with the second video, they help you to have a visual understanding of The history of China, and through the third video to understand the characteristics of some Chinese characters, and through this to learn some simple Chinese dialogue

Our second part is about the history of Dynasties in China, and our third part is about the characteristics of Chinese characters. we will introduce to you the origin of Chinese characters and how the Chinese language and Chinese culture are related. And we will introduce some useful Chinese characters, through this study you will know how to pronounce these Chinese characters, how to write these Chinese characters, if you decide to travel to China, this will help you a lot.Part four and part five teach you how to speak some simple Chinese, and there are some tests at the end.

part 3-The Origin of Chinese characters

  1. As a hieroglyphic system, Chinese has experienced a long evolution process, which can be divided into: depicting things, standardizing appearance, simplifying structure, and combining with each other to form more complex characters.
  2. Font evolution of Chinese characters: Oracle Bone Inscriptions, seal characters, official script, regular script, running script, traditional Chinese characters and simplified Chinese characters
  3. Now Chinese characters are no longer simple pictographs, but they retain some of the characteristics of pictographs and some phonetic characters.
